4:1 – Another Win at the German Supreme Court
The German Supreme Court upholds patent DE 11 2009 005 536. This latest decision confirms another key patent principle as novel and inventive, strengthening the very foundation of modern brake-by-wire systems.
The solution is always simple – you just have to find it.
In the early phase of developing the electrohydraulic brake booster, engineers tried to capture the driver’s braking intention with an expensive piezo force sensor. This approach proved not only costly but also unreliable. The signal transmission of a moving sensor was a major technical hurdle.
The German Supreme Court has now confirmed as novel and inventive a much simpler solution by inventors Heinz Leiber, Dr. Thomas Leiber, and Valentin Unterfrauner:
Using the electric motor’s built-in angle sensor to determine the piston position, and derive the driver’s intent from the difference between piston travel and pedal travel, calculated with a straightforward formula:
Force = spring constant × pedal travel
Simple. Reliable. Highly precise.
This principle underlies today’s Brake Booster technology, implemented in millions of vehicles worldwide as a core element of modern brake-by-wire systems.
